Haystack Reservoir

Every year on October 30th most of the Cascade Lakes close. I use to winterize my boat and haul it out to Sundance Meadows, where it would sit from November to April. I would spend a lot of time on Fall River satisfying my need to fish.

This year I leaned about Haystack Reservoir from a news report on a local TV channel. It highlighted the huge number of Brooder Trout that had recently been deposited into the lake from the Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery. I had never heard of the lake before. It was a surprise to learn it was only 40 minutes from my house in SE Bend, just up Highway 97. It’s open for fishing all year long and usually doesn’t freeze over.

Its a small lake, only 240 acres, compared to Crane Prairie’s 3200 acres. Haystack holds several species of fish: Rainbows, Browns, Kokanee, Bass, Catfish, Carp, Bluegill, etc. I never catch a lot of fish there, but what I do catch is usually quite large. My boat now stays in my garage, ready to go on a moment’s notice.

Ever fishing,

Pat
